Als opgeleid onderzoeksjournalist IRJ (International Research Journalist, Thomas More Hogeschool Mechelen, BE) en editor (o.a. Cameracollege Bergen op Zoom) houd ik mij het liefst bezig met beeldende kunstonderwerpen. In 2015 kwam Vincent van Gogh op mijn pad. Als opgeleid scenario-schrijver kreeg ik een opdracht van een regisseur om een script te schrijven over Vincent van Gogh. Dat script schreef ik, maar contractueel liep het niet goed. En toch ben ik dankbaar voor dit moment, deze ervaring, want het was mijn start waarbij ik in de wereld van Van Gogh dook. Ik ben in het onderzoek blijven hangen vanwege verwonderingen en kwam veel zaken tegen die nog niet verteld zijn. We hebben het hier over post-impressionistische stromingen symbolisme en synthetisme. Het was eind 19e eeuw, een tijd dat men onderzocht en ondervond. Vervolgens wilde men dit praktiseren op het doek. De visie die zij ontwikkelden is nog steeds te zien in tientallen schilderwerken en tekeningen. Het is een taal die te analyseren is. Daar houd ik mij mee bezig.
De onderzoeksmethode die ik aanhoud is conform de aanpak die ik heb geleerd in mijn opleiding onderzoeksjournalistiek, de Story-Based Inquiry methode voor onderzoeksjournalisten. Om de meeste bronnen dichtbij me te houden, heb ik een eigen bibliotheek aangelegd de afgelopen jaren. Hierin heb ik heel veel geïnvesteerd. Ik vind het subliem om uit eigen geïnvesteerd materiaal te kunnen putten. De puzzel die ik kan leggen, mede dankzij onderzoeken van andere wetenschappers en (kunst)historici, vind ik miraculeus en fenomenaal. Mijn werk heeft inmiddels geleid tot meerdere expo’s, zowel NFTs op OpenSea.io als fysiek met tekeningen van Vincent van Gogh en Paul Gauguin en uiteraard een documentaire met een heel klein inkijkje in mijn onderzoekswerk.
Om audiovisuele beeldende kunst toe te voegen is de documentaire Laat tekeningen en schilderijen vertellen – De codetaal van Vincent van Gogh en Paul Gauguin ontstaan. Deze documentaire is in één uur een samenvatting van een aantal onderzoeksgegevens waarbij vier experts aan het woord komen. Op de pagina Documentary staat een synopsis en twee trailers.
Gratias Avis is mijn beeldend kunstenaarsnaam. Tijdens het onderzoek, als onderzoeksjournalist, maakte ik eigen studieschetsen om de materie te onderzoeken, samen te vatten en te begrijpen. Hieruit ontstonden creaties via grafische vormgeving naar de originele werken van Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin en Edvard Munch. Door het bedrijf Fluidensity.art zijn ze verwerkt naar NFTs. Zo blijven mijn grafisch vormgegeven studieschetsen, met details uit originele werken, voor altijd van mij en blijven ze bestaan op meerdere werkelijkheidslijnen, op aarde en in andere kringen en dimensies.
Gratias is een oud dankgebed uit het kloosterleven, een manier om andere dimensies te bereiken. Avis is een vogel. Gratias-Avis wordt begeleid door de vogel die door verschillende sferen beweegt om het goede te verspreiden. Hoe geweldig is het dat de Metaverse hierop aansluit? Mijn werk omvat nieuwe onthullingen in een oud verhaal dat nog niet verteld is op deze manier met onderbouwing van meerdere bronnen, feiten en omstandigheden. Het is magisch. De kracht van het ontdekte Van Gogh-Gauguin verhaal toont aan dat het verborgen verhaal integriteit, opofferingsgezindheid, broederschap en genialiteit aantoont en uitstraalt. Het altruïstische gehalte van dit ware verhaal heeft meerdere kunstschilders uit die tijd geraakt waaronder Edvard Munch en Henri Matisse.
Mijn resultaten tot op heden zijn zeer divers; van beeldende kunstuitingen tot aan een non-fictie documentaire van ruim een uur met vier experts die geïnterviewd zijn. Ik maak veel content. Het waargebeurde verhaal met een altruïstisch karakter heeft kenmerken die de wereld nodig heeft. Wat er is gebeurd in 1888 en daarna is tekenend en zeer leerzaam voor onze tijd om naar vrede, vertrouwen en integriteit te gaan. Dit non-fictie kunstverhaal is een voorbeeld in wezenlijke intentie, al gebeurde er wel iets verschrikkelijks waarbij Vincent van Gogh zijn linkeroor verloor. De NFTs, als items om te verzamelen per stuk of als collage, zijn daarom ontzettend belangrijk en betekenisvol. Wie zo’n NFT aanschaft, heeft de diepere waarde uit dit verhaal dat de kunstschilders zelf vertellen via hun werken. Het is wonderlijk en uniek.

Cameracollege Bergen op Zoom, NL), I prefer to deal with visual art subjects. In 2015, Vincent van Gogh came my way. As a trained screenwriter, I was commissioned by a director to write a script about Vincent van Gogh. I wrote that script, but contractually it didn’t work out. And yet I am grateful for this moment, this experience, because it was my start where I plunged into the world of Van Gogh. I lingered in the research because of wonder and came across many things that have not yet been told. We are talking about post-impressionist movements symbolism and synthetism. It was a time in the late 19th century when people researched and experienced. They wanted to practise this on canvas. The vision they developed can still be seen in dozens of paintings and drawings. It is a language that can be analysed. That is what I deal with.
The research method I use is in line with the approach I learned in my investigative journalism training, the Story-Based Inquiry method for investigative journalists. In order to keep most of my sources close to me, I have built up my own library over the past few years. I have invested a lot in it. I find it sublime to be able to draw on my own invested material. The puzzle that I can piece together, thanks in part to research by other scientists and (art) historians, I find miraculous and phenomenal. My work has now led to several exhibitions, both NFTs on OpenSea.io and physical exhibitions with drawings by Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin and, of course, a documentary with a very small glimpse into my research work.

Gratias Avis is my visual artist name. While researching, as an investigative journalist, I made my own study sketches to explore, summarise and understand the subject matter. From this came creations via graphic design after the original works of Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Edvard Munch. The company Fluidensity.art has turned them into NFTs. This way, my graphically designed study sketches, with details from original works, will remain mine forever and continue to exist on multiple lines of reality, on earth and in other spheres and dimensions.
Gratias is an ancient prayer of thanksgiving from monastic life, a way to reach other dimensions. Avis is a bird. Gratias-Avis is accompanied by the bird moving through different realms to spread goodness. How amazing is it that the Metaverse connects to this? My work involves new revelations in an old story not yet told in this way with substantiation from multiple sources, facts and circumstances. It is magical. The power of the discovered Van Gogh-Gauguin story shows that the hidden story demonstrates and radiates integrity, self-sacrifice, brotherhood and genius. The altruistic content of this true story has touched several painters of that time, including Edvard Munch and Henri Matisse.
My results to date are very diverse; from visual art expressions to a non-fiction documentary of over an hour with four experts interviewed. I create a lot of content. The true story with an altruistic character has characteristics that the world needs. What happened in 1888 and afterwards is illustrative and very educational for our time as we strive for peace, trust and integrity. This non-fiction art story is an example of essential intention, even though something terrible did happen in which Vincent van Gogh lost his left ear. The NFTs, as collectible items or as a collage, are therefore incredibly important and meaningful. Those who purchase an NFT get the deeper value from this story that the artists themselves tell through their works. It is wonderful and unique.
